ニューヨークの皆様こんにちは髙波壮太郎です。今年72歳になりました。今回の個展のテーマは様々ですが、僕は元々私小説作家で、自分が生きて見て感じた事をモチーフにしています。特に悲しい時、辛い時は森羅万象が特に美しく感じられます。野の花、海、黒い揚羽蝶、竹などが特に好きで絵のテーマにしています。
コンクリートの中から出張っている小さな名も知らない花、側溝の中で誰の目にも止まらない露草、人間が太陽に向かって生きている様に感じさせられる向日葵、そして揚羽蝶は神の声を届ける妖精たちです。
友人の別荘で、運動神経の悪い僕がシュノーケリングを教わり、初めて見た海の底のイメージは、フォルムが複雑でとても美しく宇宙創成を感じました。
僕はこの何十年決まった時間に絵を描きます。早朝6時10分から9時頃までです。ともかくこの時間帯は絵が描きたくて描きたくてたまりません。そしてインスピレーションが一番強く湧き上がる時です。絵は僕にとって食事をする様なもの、そして砂漠で熱い太陽に照り付けられ、喉が渇いた時飲む水の様なものです。
そんな僕の絵をその人なりに受け止め感じ取って貰えれば、望外の喜びです。
日本では40年にもわたり多くの個展、フランスでは3度の個展を経て、様々な人々との出会いと交流を通し、その場々の風に吹かれ、そこで感じた事も作品にしてきました。
だいぶ前から、ニューヨークで個展を開催したいと思っていました。この度、縁があってニューヨークで個展を開く機会に恵まれました。コロナ禍のため、実際会場に行かれず皆様と対話できないことはとても残念ですが、僕の言葉は全て絵の中に入り込んでいます。絵はその人の心を映し出す鏡です。見る方はその絵を鏡にして何かを感じ取って貰えればとても有難いです。今回のニューヨークの個展ではテーマは一つに絞り切っていません。多様な考え方をして描いた作品群の一つ一つがそれ自身で発光し、強い存在感で絵自らが語りかける言葉を感じ取って貰えればとても嬉しいです。
最後に絵を描く事は僕にとって砂漠で咽が渇いた時に飲む水の様なもので、精神バランスの悪い僕には生きて行く為に必要不可欠なもので生きる事そのものです。
余談ではありますが、今展の為に送った作品が税関で止められました。あまりに重たいので不審に思われた様です。絵の具チューブで納得いくまで描き進めると尋常でない重さになります。そのような作品も含め楽しんでいただけたらと思います。

Hello everyone in New York. I am Sotaro Takanami. I am 72 years old this year. For this solo exhibition, I have various themes. More specifically, I am originally a novelist for so-called autobiographical novel which is written based on the author’s own impressions and experiences of life. That is, my painting motif comes from what I saw and felt in my life. Especially, when I feel sad or I have a hard time, I feel every natural thing in this universe beautiful. Especially, I like wild flowers, seas, black swallowtail butterflies, bamboos, etc. Then, I often take them as the themes of my painting.
For example, a tiny unknown flower protruding from the concrete block, a dayflower in the gutter which is not caught by someone’s eyes, a sunflower that makes humans feel like they are living towards the sun, and a swallowtail butterfly which is like a fairy delivering messages from God.
When I stayed at my friend’s villa, my friend taught me snorkeling, even though I have poor reflexes. Then he took me to snorkeling, and when I first saw the bottom of the sea, my imagination of the sea bottom was that its form was complicated and beautiful so that I felt the creation of the universe.
For these several decades, I draw a picture at a fixed time in the early morning, starting from 6:10am to 9am. Anyway, I am dying to draw a picture in this early morning while I feel the strongest inspiration for painting. To me, the painting is something like eating, i.e., something essential for my life or the water I drink when I feel thirsty in the desert under the hot and burning sun.
It would be an unexpected joy and pleasure for me, if you could get some impression from my paintings created in such a way and feel them in your own way.
After more than hundred solo exhibitions in Japan for 40 years and three solo exhibitions in France, I have met and interacted with various people coming to watch my paintings. After those encounters, I have felt that I have been blown by the wind caused by the exhibition occasions and the people watching my paintings. Then I have created works according to what I have felt there.
I have always desired to hold a solo exhibition in New York for a long time. This time, I was blessed with the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in New York. It is really, really pity for me that I can’t actually attend this sole exhibition and directly talk with everyone coming to the exhibition because of the covid-19 pandemic. I do hope that you find all my words I want to say are in my paintings there. A picture is a mirror that reflects the painter’s heart and mind. I would be more than happy, if you could feel something from my paintings by using the paintings as a mirror. In this solo exhibition in New York, my theme is not narrowed down to one. I would be very happy if each one of my paintings drawn with various ideas emits its own light to you so that you can feel the words expressed and spoken to you with strong presence by the painting itself.
Finally, for me, drawing a picture is like drinking water when I am thirsty in the hot desert, and it is indispensable for me in order to live while keeping my poor mental balance better. That is, my painting is just my maintaining to live.
Further, the painting works I sent for this exhibition were first suspended by the customs. They are so heavy so that the customs seemed suspicious about the items. If I keep drawing a picture with the paint tubes until I am satisfied, the weight of the picture will become unusually heavy. Some people call the heavy painting work as thick painting. I do hope you enjoy my painting works including such such thick painting works.
Lastly, I strongly do hope the covid pandemic will soon be overcome by human being and we can enjoy our lives and hopefully I can really meet you all in my exhibition.

1973年 多摩美術大学油彩科卒業。在学中に中本達也氏に師事。
1986年 フランセーズコレクションより東京、パリにて版画集「Ｎature」を同時発売。
1988年 清水凡亭氏と「絵のある俳句展」を京都髙島屋にて開催。

2005年 ギャラリー・ラ・リュ－シュにて「パリを描く展」開催。
2009年 髙島屋新宿店にて個展開催(’11,’14,’17,’19,’21)。
2010年 笹川平和財団より「THE BEGINNING OF SPACE」＜神々の開闢＞中東に向けて刊行。横綱白鵬関の化粧まわしの下絵制作。
2014年 11月銀座吉井画廊本館、サロンにて同時個展開催。
2016年 いよてつ髙島屋にて個展開催。
2017年 髙島屋京都店にて個展開催（’19）。
2018年 玄羅アートにて個展以後毎年開催。
2019年 LAアートショーに出展(‘21)。モナコヨットショーに出展。12月スコープマイアミバーゼルに出展。
