Kunio Izuka (飯塚 国雄)

Kunio Izuka (1939‒2020) came to Los Angeles in 1961 to study visual art at Otis Art Institute. Three years later, he moved to New York and, in 1968, taught sculpture at The Art Students League of New York. In 1973, Izuka established and became the first president of JAANY (Japanese Artist Association of New York). Over half a century, he has made great contributions to the art world in both New York and Japan until his death in July 2020, at the age of 81. Izuka received the Konju Hoshou award from the Japanese Government in 1998.

Selected solo exhibitions are “Anti-Nuclear” at United Nations (1995), “To My Atom-Bombed Father” at International Peace Museum of Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto (2007), and “Half a Century in New York” at Tenri Cultural Institute of New York (2015). Major collections are at Nagasaki International Peace Hall, Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum, International Peace Museum of Ritsumeikan University, Gunma Prefecture Museum, Tomioka City Museum, Utsunomiya City Museum, and Time Warner Communication Inc..
