市議会の会議室には、もう議員の有力メンバーが顔を揃えていました。市長に紹介された女の子は、壇上に立つや、あいさつもそこそこに本題を切り出しました。
「みなさん、私の学校の自由研究の発表がきっかけで、市内のパーキングメーターが新しいものに取り替えられるかもしれないって聞きました。でも、でも、ちょっと待ってください。このあたしの時計は、おばあちゃんが使っていたものです。修理をしたら立派に使えるようになりました。まだ直せば使えるものを修理もしないで簡単に捨ててしまってもいいんでしょうか。まだ、完全に壊れてしまっていないものは、修理して使ってみてくれませんか？」
議員の人たちは顔を見合わせて、また女の子を見ました。
「このおばあちゃんの時計は、古い分だけたくさんの思い出がつまった私の宝物です」
この言葉が議会の偉い人たちを動かしたようです。

At the council meeting room, the faces of the council members
were already lining the benches. The girl who had been introduced by the mayor
stood and without so much as a greeting, went straight to the point. “Everyone, due to the findings of my independent study assignment,I heard the parking meters of the city might get replaced. But, please wait and hear me out. This watch of mine used to be my grandmother’s.
Once I got it repaired I was able to use it again. Rather than fixing something so we can still use it, do you think it’s okay to
simply throw away something without fixing it? Won’t you please
repair the things that aren’t completely broken yetand try to use them again?”
The council members looked at each other and back at the girl.
“My grandmother’s watch is old, but it carries a lot of memories
so it’s my treasure.”
